I enjoy a professional collaboration and a special friendship with Ms. Ane Landøy, Head of the Art and Humanities Library of the University of Bergen, Norway. Our friendship and cooperation started in 2003 when we worked on developing the first Leonardo da Vinci programmes in the field of continued education. Searching for European partners I sent a letter of intention to the University of Bergen. I received a reply from their library. Ane was a newcomer to the field, and she was eager to improve and to make a mark for herself. That was to become the beginning of a special friendship. If one is able to gain their trust, the Scandinavians, a cold and withdrawn people at the first glance, are capable of so much devotion.

Capacity Building in Southern Sudan: A Situational Analysis

This paper reports the filed work findings on a project: Capacity Building in Southern Sudan: Educating Librarians for the Future (EDLIB). EDLIB is a joint project implemented by various partners in Norway and South supported by the Norwegian University Cooperation Programme for Capacity Development in Sudan (NUCOOP). The study employed structured interviews, which were conducted targeting LIS professionals in LIS institutions supplemented by the Focus group discussions with available documentation. This paper describes the capacity building in LIS in SS and presents developments of LIS capacity in SS, challenges of LIS education and training, and strategies for capacity building in LIS. It concludes that in order to develop competences and skills for LIS development in SS, there is a need of developing capacity of librarians in these universities and also teaching staff in the LIS departments to acquire technical knowledge and competences in meeting demands of electronic age. Juba EdLib ScholarshipsUniversity of Juba invites applications from interested citizens with relevant qualifications to apply for scholarships at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda, for studies through Norwegian government funded project at University of Juba “Capacity building in Southern Sudan: Educating Librarians for the future (EdLib)”, for the academic year 2010/2011. NUCOOP in The Citizen, March 2010
Government of Norway yesterday signed a deal to help universities in Southern Sudan improve their academic status. “We strongly belive that higher education is important for the creation of intellectual capacity to produce and utilize knowledge, and empowerment and awareness of both female and male students,” said the Consult General of norway in Juba, Ingrid Ofstad. Celebrating cooperation between Sudan and Norway
